Sell Your Old Gaming Laptop: What It's Worth in 2026

Gaming laptops depreciate differently than regular laptops. Here's what your Alienware, Razer, MSI, or ASUS ROG is actually worth.

Gaming laptops are a different beast. They cost $1,000-3,000+ new, pack serious hardware, and depreciate on a different curve than regular laptops. Here's what you need to know about selling yours β€” with real prices from our database of 17,192+ models.

Why Gaming Laptops Hold Value Better

A standard Dell Inspiron might lose 50% of its value in two years. A gaming laptop with a dedicated GPU? More like 35-40% in the same period. The reason is the GPU. A laptop with an RTX 3070 or 4060 is still a capable gaming machine years after purchase. The GPU creates a value floor that regular laptops don't have.

The exception: when NVIDIA or AMD releases a new GPU generation, last-gen prices drop 15-20% within weeks. That's your signal to sell before the announcement, not after.

Real Prices From Our Database (March 2026)

RTX 50-Series (Current Gen): $1,500-1,980

The newest gaming laptops command premium prices. An Alienware 18 with RTX 5090 tops our chart at $1,980. The MSI Titan 18 HX with RTX 5080 fetches $1,890. If you have a 50-series and want to sell, now is peak value β€” these depreciate fastest in the first 6 months.

RTX 40-Series (Last Gen): $600-987

The sweet spot of the used market. An ASUS ROG Strix SCAR with RTX 4090 gets up to $987. ROG Strix G16 with RTX 4090: $892. The ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo with RTX 4090 sits at $892. RTX 4070 models typically range $600-800 depending on brand and condition.

RTX 30-Series (2 Gens Back): $350-700

Still solid gaming machines. Alienware x17 with RTX 3080: $500-700. Razer Blade 15 with RTX 3070: $450-650. ASUS ROG Strix with RTX 3070: $400-600. Lenovo Legion 5 with RTX 3070: $350-550. These are declining steadily β€” sell in the next 3 months before RTX 50-series pushes them down further.

GTX 10/16-Series and RTX 20-Series: $150-400

Older gaming laptops are approaching budget territory. GTX 1070/1080 laptops fetch $150-300. RTX 2060/2070 models get $200-400. These still have gaming value for buyers on a budget, but they're losing ground every quarter.

What Affects Your Gaming Laptop's Value

GPU is king β€” it's 60% of the price determination. An i5 with RTX 4070 is worth more than an i9 with RTX 3060.

CPU generation matters β€” but less than GPU. 13th/14th gen Intel or Ryzen 7000-series commands a premium over older chips.

RAM and storage β€” 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD are the sweet spots. 16GB/512GB configurations sell for 10-15% less.

Condition β€” Gaming laptops see hard use. Thermal paste dries out, fans accumulate dust, and batteries degrade from heat. A gaming laptop in "Good" condition (normal wear from use) is the typical grade we see. Don't expect "Flawless" unless you babied it.

Brand premium β€” Alienware and Razer hold value best (brand cachet). ASUS ROG offers the best performance-to-value. MSI and Lenovo Legion are solid mid-range resale.

When to Sell: The GPU Calendar

NVIDIA typically announces new GPUs at CES (January) or GTC (March), with laptop versions shipping 2-3 months later. AMD follows a similar cycle. The rule: sell 1-2 months before the next GPU generation ships. Once reviews of the new GPUs hit YouTube, your old card's value drops overnight.

If you have an RTX 40-series right now, you're in the sweet spot β€” the 50-series is out but still expensive, so 40-series demand is strong. Don't wait until the 50-series laptops hit sales and clearance.
